History of the theatre:
Already at the foundation time the programme was dominated by operettas, song plays and folk plays and is marked till this day beside the serious opera also by the lighter types of the music theatre.
The gardener's place theatre was founded in 1865 as "an Actien-national theatre". In 1872 it was appointed by king Ludwig II to the third court stage. Since 1937 it is under care of the Bavarian free state.
Built up in 1948 after heavy war damages.

Called from the inhabitants of Munich affectionately "palace of the smile", the German theatre is a unique event in the German stage scenery and at the same time one of the entertainment theatres most steeped in tradition of Germany.
With the German theatre Munich confesses as the only German town to the wide genre of the musical stage entertainment.

Das Deutsche Theater wurde 1896 als Haus für naturalistisch-realistisches Sprechtheater eröffnet. 1897 erfolgte die Umwandlung in eine Institution für gehobenes Unterhaltungstheater. Im Sommer 2008 siedelte Deutschlands größtes Gastspieltheater aufgrund längerer Sanierungsmaßnahmen am Stammhaus in der Innenstadt in einer spektakulären Aktion nach Fröttmaning um, wo es in Europas größtem freitragenden Zeltbau einen würdigen Rahmen gefunden hat, um bis zu seiner Rückkehr in die Schwanthalerstraße seine über 100-jährige Traditon als Bühne und Ballhaus der Münchner weiter zu führen.

Im Januar und Februar verwandelt sich das Deutsche Theater in das Ballhaus der Stadt München. Dann ist das Theater der größte Ballsaal der Stadt und mit seinen prächtigen Dekorationen die Hochburg des Münchner Ballfaschings. Von den Münchnern liebevoll "Palast des Lächelns" genannt, ist das Deutsche Theater ein Unikum in der deutschen Bühnenlandschaft und zugleich eines der traditionsreichsten Unterhaltungstheater Deutschlands.
